On Saturday, July 26, 2025, Velma Jean Wood, 83, passed away at home in the company of her devoted family. On September 4, 1941, Jess and Wilma Beaver welcomed Velma into the world in Pleasant Plains.
Maple Springs Missionary Baptist Church was where Velma belonged. Every time the doors opened, Velma eagerly anticipated attending church and particularly enjoyed her favorite gospel music. In addition to cooking, cross-stitching, gardening, and quilting, her favorite pastime was being a grandmother to her grandchildren.
Her parents, husband Charles, brothers Burnace and Dale Beaver, sister Thelma Warren, nephews Danny and Travis Beaver, and son-in-law Gary Gleaves all passed away before her.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Wood and Rhonda Gleaves; 15 great-grandchildren, Logan, Hudson, Reesi, Tylen, Raelynn, Millie, Tessie, Josie, Gracie, Elsie, Jayden, Madilyn, Sawyer, Bristol, Lee, and one great-great granddaughter, Haisley; and grandchildren, Sara (Rickie) Westbrook, Andy (Kayla) Martin, Matt (Danae) Martin, Amy Vaughn, and Meagan (Shannon) Fennell.
Funeral services will be conducted by Bros. Curt Howard, Shannon Fennell, and Verlon Wood at Maple Springs Missionary Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Qualls Funeral Homes will make the arrangements for the burial, which will take place in Pleasant Plains’ Union Grove Cemetery.
The church will be open for visits on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
Rickie Westbrook, Shannon Fennell, Sawyer Fennell, Andy Martin, Matt Martin, Logan Westbrook, Lee Beel, Jayden Lindsey, Tylen Tarrants, and Hudson Westbrook will all be pallbearers.
