Man charged in Ruston vehicle burglaries

Police detained a Shreveport man on June 17 after he reportedly broke into two cars at an assisted care home in Ruston.

Ruston Police accused 52-year-old William Bates with simple burglary and additional offenses.

Bates was observed by a staff member of The Arbor and Terrace of Ruston getting into the building’s bus, which was parked in the front lot. The man had gone into a tan automobile on the west side of the parking lot before the police arrived. Officers arrived and discovered Bates in a tan Lincoln vehicle.

According to an officer’s report, Bates informed police he had not been on the bus and that he was simply hanging out and did not know anyone from the institution.

The vehicle was found to belong to a resident who was unrelated to Bates. Additionally, officers found that the bus’s console beneath the steering wheel had been ripped out, exposing wires that were dangling from the dashboard. An open bag with items strewn about it was discovered close to the driver’s seat.

According to an officer’s report, Bates squatted closer to the ground and then fell backwards while being placed in a patrol car because he refused to answer any more questions and was placed under arrest. After helping Bates stand again, an officer put a hand on his shoulder and led him toward the back of the patrol car. Bates pushed the officer’s hand away and swung his shoulder back at him.

Bates was arrested on two counts of simple motor vehicle burglary, simple criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, and resisting an officer in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center.

A law enforcement organization has made this material available to the public. Until proven guilty in a court of law, people named or depicted in photos or videos as suspects in a criminal investigation, or who are detained and accused of a crime, are deemed innocent.
