According to County Judge Kevin Jeffery, Independence County has implemented a fire burn prohibition that will last until further notice.
During this time, residents are urged to refrain from any outside burning.
Restrictions are being implemented throughout north-central and northeast Arkansas due to the ongoing late-summer drought. According to the Aug. 14drought statementfrom the National Weather Service, parts of Arkansas are experiencing moderate drought (D1), with 61% of the state classified as abnormally dry (D0). The risk of wildfire has increased due to the majority of the last 30 days’ rainfall being two inches or less. Early this week, forecasters also caution of a persistent drying trend.
There have been reports of more burn prohibitions in the counties of Cleburne, Fulton, Izard, Sharp, and White. When limits are imposed or removed by local authorities, things can shift quickly. Before starting an outdoor fire, Arkansans can check the Forestry Division’s real-time map for the most recent county burn status.
