Food assistance available for Arkansans affected by spring storms

According to the Department of Human Services, Arkansans who lost loved ones in severe storms and tornadoes on March 14–14 and April 2–22 can start applying for SNAP Disaster Assistance (D-SNAP) on Monday.

According to an agency news release, D-SNAP provides benefits to households that would not typically be eligible but currently require food assistance due to a disaster. Food goods can be purchased at approved stores using the electronic debit card that provides D-SNAP benefits. To be eligible for D-SNAP support, recipients do not need to be SNAP participants.

Assistance may be available to residents of these counties who directly experienced at least one of the following conditions as a result of the storms:

  • Damage to or destruction of their home or self-employment business
  • Loss or inaccessibility of income including a reduction or termination of income, or a significant delay in receiving income due to disaster-related problems
  • Disaster-related expenses (home or business repairs, temporary shelter, evacuation, etc.) that are not expected to be reimbursed during the disaster benefit period
  • Residents and workers can apply for D-SNAP from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 4-10. Assistance is available by contacting your local county office.

In order to make sure the system was functioning and that Arkansans affected by these storms had time to submit applications, DHS established this new application period after consulting with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the announcement stated. During the August 4–10 submission period, Arkansans who have already been in touch with DHS regarding filing for D-SNAP benefits will be given information on how to complete a formal application.
