Cave City football program moving to 8-man format

Published On:

For the 2025 season, the Cave City School District has declared that it will not be able to play sanctioned 11-man high school football.

Superintendent Steven Green wrote to Lance Taylor, executive director of the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA), on August 15 (see below), stating that the district met with the community and spoke with athletes before deciding it could not meet its commitment to field an 11-man junior and senior high program. He also expressed regret for the inconvenience and said Cave City would inform all schools impacted by the decision.

Instead, Cave City intends to implement an eight-man football program. According to AAA regulations, such a format would not be approved, the letter acknowledged.

As the primary governing body for high school athletics in the state, the AAA is in charge of eligibility rules, season scheduling, and classifications.

Cave City informed the other Conference 4A-3 schools about switching to eight-man football because of insufficient participation, according to Jonesboro media site KAIT.

Schools with roster difficulties usually switch to eight-man football, a version of the classic game with fewer participants.

Even though eight-man formats have been adopted by a number of states and Arkansas schools, they are still subject to distinct regulations regarding playoff eligibility and sanctioning.
