Batesville’s first roundabout partially opens at 20th Street and Pioneer Drive

The first roundabout in Batesville, which is situated close to the Community Center at the intersection of Pioneer Drive, Myers Street, and 20th Street, is now partially open to traffic.

Myers Street had to be closed from Sidney Street to the intersection of 20th and Pioneer as part of the Myers Street Improvement Project, which started on June 9.

By permitting cars to pass continuously through the crossroads, the single-lane roundabout aims to enhance traffic flow, especially around Batesville High School. According to a traffic study, throughout the school year, an average of 7,000 vehicles pass through the neighborhood every day.

Traffic between 20th Street and Pioneer Drive, including access to the high school, can now use the roundabout as of early August. Myers Street is still closed and won’t reopen until more work is done.

Guidelines for negotiating the roundabout have been released by the Batesville Police Department:

  • Yield to traffic already in the circle.
  • Travel counterclockwise in one direction.
  • Do not stop once inside the roundabout.
  • Use turn signals and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

According to Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson, the project is proceeding according to plan, and Myers Street should fully reopen later this year.
