BRINGING OUT THE DEADTUESDAY, July 15, is the title of the Arkansas Times film series. Riverdale 10 VIP Theater. 7 p.m. $12–$14.
As we learn at the beginning of Martin Scorsese’s 1999 film Bringing Out the Dead, New York paramedic Frank Pierce (Nicolas Cage) is in poor health. His link to reality is perilously shaky as he battles despair, insomnia, and hallucinations of the young woman he was unable to save. Scorsese’s fourth and last work with screenwriter Paul Schrader spans three lengthy shifts in a single day, following Frank as he spirals into chaos with a string of increasingly unstable EMTs (John Goodman, Ving Rhames, and Tom Sizemore) and looks for forgiveness in a reformed addict (Patricia Arquette), whose father is on life support after Frank saves him. Even though Scorsese moved on to more lavish locations and larger budgets after Bringing Out the Dead, it’s always a thrill to see the movie that capped off his earlier, more gritty period.
