State extends income tax deadline again; new date is Dec. 3

The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration announced on Tuesday that because of the lingering impacts of the catastrophic storms that struck parts of the state this spring, taxpayers in Arkansas will have even longer time to file a return this year. Filers will still need to complete an IRS form, but the new deadline is December 3.

The deadline has been extended twice this year, according to the notice. Tax day for both state and federal returns is typically April 15. In April, Governor Sarah Sanders issued an order for the state to postpone this year’s deadline until July 31. Meanwhile, the IRS extended the federal deadline until November 3.

Similar to the April extension, the current one announced Tuesday covers all 75 counties in Arkansas, not just those affected by the storms earlier this year.In March and April, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and flooding killed several people, injured numerous more, and damaged northern Arkansas to the tune of millions of dollars.

This is the state’s announcement:

Governor Sanders issued Executive Orders 25-08 and 25-09 extending the deadline for residents in all 75 counties to file their income tax returns due to the springtime natural disasters that occurred in different portions of Arkansas. The Orders moved the April 15, 2025, deadline for filing a state income tax return to July 31, 2025.

Some Arkansans will not be able to file their state income tax returns by the July 31, 2025 deadline because of the continued consequences of the natural catastrophes. According to Arkansas law, impacted taxpayers are also given an extension of one (1) month from the date of the federal income tax return to file their state income tax return, as the IRS has extended the deadline for filing a federal tax return from April 15, 2025 to November 3, 2025. This results in an extension of the 2024 state income tax return deadline to December 3, 2025. Individuals, Subchapter S and C corporations, pass-through entities, partnerships, fiduciaries and estates, and composite returns are all included in this relief for 2024. Returns that are timely filed by December 3, 2025, will not be subject to penalties. However, in order to avoid penalties and interest, the deadlines for any expected tax payments are not extended and must be paid when they are due.

The extension of the state income tax return due date to December 3, 2025, is available to individuals and entities in all 75 counties. The taxpayer must either tick the federal extension box on the form or attach the IRS notification granting the federal extension due to the disaster (AR-2025-03). Here is a link to the IRS notification for your convenience, which the taxpayer can print and attach to their return:The IRS has announced that the deadlines for various tax relief programs for storm victims in Arkansas have been pushed back to November 3.
