Ruston traffic stop leads to numerous charges

In Ruston, a man and a woman were detained on multiple narcotics accusations, driving infractions, and outstanding warrants.

On June 20, Ruston Police arrested Gregory Williams, 28, of Farmerville, and Keisha Cornett, 48, of Marion, during a traffic check.

On South Farmerville Street, an RPD officer observed Williams operating a car with unlawfully tinted windows and a license plate covering. The officer noticed an open bottle of beer and detected the smell of marijuana emanating from inside the car when it was stopped.

Williams acknowledged that there was marijuana in the car. Three marijuana-containing cigars were discovered beneath Williams’ seat during a search. Williams was wanted on three warrants for failing to appear in Ruston City Court, two warrants from Third District Court in Union Parish, and his driver’s license was suspended, according to a records check.

Cornett was a passenger in the car’s front seat. She acknowledged that there was an open container of alcohol in the car. She was wanted for not showing up for a theft allegation in Ruston City Court, according to a records check. After being arrested, she acknowledged that she had a tiny bit of marijuana in her jeans. The personnel got the marijuana from the jail facility.

A few hours later, while watching in-car footage, the officer noticed Cornett taking objects out of her pants while she was in the backseat of the patrol car. When she tried to pass the things to Williams, he gestured toward the video camera and refused to accept them.

According to the footage, Cornett was able to put something in her mouth and bring her head to her shackled hands. Later, Cornet acknowledged that, in order to avoid being charged, she had chewed up an MDMA (ecstasy) tablet. During the stop, a gun had also been discovered beneath her seat.

In addition to the Union Parish and Ruston City Court warrants, Williams was also charged with possession of marijuana, open container, incorrect license plate display, improper window tinting, and driving while suspended.

Cornett was first charged with marijuana possession, open container, and failure to appear. Charges of obstruction of justice, resisting an officer, possession of MDMA, and possession of a handgun in the presence of a controlled substance were added when the video was examined.

A law enforcement organization has made this material available to the public. Until proven guilty in a court of law, people named or depicted in photos or videos as suspects in a criminal investigation, or who are detained and accused of a crime, are deemed innocent.
