David Gerald Nitz, 82, will have a private memorial service at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 2201 Airline Dr., Bossier City, Louisiana, on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. There will be an open visitation from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Pastor Larry Earhart will officiate the event.
David was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on July 10, 1942, to Leon Dare and Wanda Arlue Nitz. He died in Minden, Louisiana, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
David was a pillar of the Louisiana Tech community, a passionate storyteller, and a voice of the game. He earned a journalism degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1977 and spent half of his life there, serving the school with zeal, devotion, and a voice that future generations knew and loved.
David became a legend behind the microphone during his incredible career, calling over 6,000 minor league games and an estimated 4,500 games for LA Tech. He called the Shreveport Captains Minor League Baseball team’s three Texas League titles in 1990, 1991, and 1995 during his 14-year tenure as their voice. In recognition of his skill, commitment, and the happiness he brought to fans around the state, he was named Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year in 2009, admitted into the LA Tech Hall of Fame in 2011, and inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
Outside of the press box, David’s family brought him the most happiness. On June 22, 1963, he wed his devoted wife, Marlene Nitz, and the two of them spent a lifetime of love, laughter, and steadfast support.
In addition to the games he called, David will be remembered for the legacy he created throughout the years via his heart, storytelling, and mentoring. Even though his voice is no longer heard, his influence endures.
